    • The President of India, Pranab Mukharjee on 12 May 2014 gave his assent to the Whistleblowers Protection Bill 2011. The Whistleblowers Protection Act, 2011, provides a mechanism for protecting the identity of whistleblowers a term given to people who expose corruption. The Act, however, lays down punishment of up to two years in prison and a fine of up to `30,000 for false or frivolous complains.
    • Scientist have identified a massive new exoplanet that takes a record `80,000 Earth years to make a complete orbit around its star, 155 light years away from our solar system. The gas giant has been added to the short list of exoplanets discovered through direct imaging. It is located in the constellation Pisces.
    • Foreign branches and overseas subsidiaries of Indian banks have been allowed by the RBI to sell structured financial and derivative products in established financial centres even if these products are not permitted in India. However, these products like Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and Bond Derivatives are not allowed in the domestic market.
    • Indian Railway released a book, titled ‘India Junction a Window to the Nation’. The book has been brought out by Public Relations Directorate, Railway Board. Which tells the story of the long and eventful journey of Indian Railways starting from 1853 to the present day through in-depth, analytical essays that are rich in history, scrumptious travel pieces and some truly amazing and rare photo features celebrates the changes the Railways has brought about in our lives.
    • International Nurses Day was observed across the world on 12 May 2014. The day is observed every year on anniversary of birth of Florence Nightingale’s birth.
