1. IIT Delhi Sets Up India’s First 5G Lab
Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology lab, India’s first-of-its-kind 5G radio laboratory will be inaugurated at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on April 13, 2018.
The Massive MIMO Technology Lab has been set up at the Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology and Management, at IIT Delhi.
This 5G base station prototype will be used for developing a complete 5G base station, which can lead to the manufacturing of 5G base stations in India in near future.
Most important feature of Massive MIMO is the deployment of several antennas as compared to only a few antennas in 3G/4G.
Having several antennas improves system power efficiency, as the mobile terminals would be required to radiate ten times lesser power than in 3G/4G systems.
This consequentially reduces interference to other radio systems and also reduces possible effects of exposure to radiation on human health.
2. New Delhi’s IGI Airport Ranked 16th in the List of 20 Busiest Airports in the World
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport entered the club of the top 20 airports across the world, as per the Airport Council International’s preliminary report on airport traffic for 2017.
While, New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport was pushed out of the top 20 club, with the entry of the IGI Airport.
3. “Gram Swaraj Abhiyan – Special Interventions” : Seven Schemes for Poor in 17,000 Villages in 21 Days
The Union Government launched “Gram Swaraj Abhiyan- Special Interventions”, an high-intensity outreach programme to deliver welfare schemes to select villages which need particular attention.
It was lunched on the occasion of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti (14th April).
4. Sixth Edition of Heat Action Plan Launched in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), in Gujarat launched 6th edition of Heat Action Plan (HAP) aimed at protecting city dwellers from scorching temperatures during summer.
The plan has been designed and will be implemented in partnership with Gandhinagar-based Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) and US based Natural Resources Defence Council (NRDC) along with other groups and NGOs.
AMC has been implementing HAP since 2013.
Ahmedabad is the first city to prepare and implement heat action plan.
5. PM Modi Leaves on 5-Day Visit to Sweden & UK Today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting two European countries Sweden and the UK for bilateral meetings and for the India-Nordic Summit and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
In the first leg, Prime Minister will attend the first-ever India-Nordic Summit in Stockholm which is being co-hosted by India and Sweden.
In the second leg (Wed-Fri) of his visit. Mr. Modi will address a unique event ‘Bharat Ki Baat, Sabke Saath’ in London on Wednesday.
The Prime Minister will also participate in the CHOGM being hosted by the United Kingdom.
Besides Mr. Modi, Prime Ministers of Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland will attend the Summit.
The Nordic countries have globally recognized strengths in clean technologies, environmental solutions, ports modernization, cold-chains, skill development, and innovation.
6. Odisha CM Inaugurates Bridge Connecting Jharsaguda District with Sambalpur
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has inaugurated a ‘2.5 km long bridge’ constructed over river Ib (a tributary of Mahanadi) that will connect Jharsaguda district with Sambalpur.
It will help connect the coal region of Brajarjnagar & Belpahar in Jharsuguda district with Sambalpur & boost economic activities in the area.
The bridge has been constructed at a cost of over 117 crore rupees.
It will reduce the distance between Lakhanpur and Sambalpur by 50 kilometers.
7. Nepal: Bisket Jatra to be Celebrated in Bhaktapur
The famous nine days annual festival ‘Bisket Jatra’ (Nepali new year) is being celebrated in Bhaktapur and the other parts of Kathmandu valley in Nepal.
The Jatra begins four days before the start of new year.
The main attraction of Bisket Jatra is chariot procession of Lord Bhairavanath.
It is believed that the festival started during Malla dynasty.
Thousands of visitors from various parts of Nepal and a large number of foreign tourists gather at Bhaktapur to see this thrilling event.
8. Dharmendra to Receive Raj Kapoor Lifetime Achievement Award
According to the Maharashtra culture minister, Veteran Bollywood actor ‘Dharmendra’ (82-year) will be conferred with the prestigious ‘Raj Kapoor Lifetime Achievement’ and filmmaker ‘Rajkumar Hirani’ with Raj Kapoor Special Contribution awards.
Dharmendra has acted in more than 250 films in over six decades and has over 100 box office hits including Bandini, Mamta, Anupama, Satyakam, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Yaadon Ki Baarat to name a few.
Mr. Hirani is regarded as one of the most celebrated filmmakers of Hindi cinema, having made critically-acclaimed and commercially-successful films such as “Munna Bhai MBBS“, “3 Idiots” and “PK“.
Veteran Marathi actor Vijay Chavhan for V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement award and actor-director Mrinal Kulkarni for V Shantaram Special Contribution awards.
9. Saina First Indian Shuttler to Win Two Singles Gold in Commonwealth Games
Ace Indian shuttler ‘Saina Nehwal’ defeated PV Sindhu 21-18, 23-21 in women’s singles final to clinch a gold medal in women’s badminton singles at the 21st Commonwealth Games.
Now, she became the first Indian shuttler to have won two singles gold medals in badminton in Commonwealth Games.
Earlier, Saina had won a gold medal in 2010 Commonwealth Games which were hosted by India.
10. India Ends the Campaign in Third Spot with 26 Gold Medals at CWG 2018
India has eventually finished their 21st Commonwealth Games campaign on the third spot at Gold Coast, Australia.
Legendary Boxer MC Mery Kom leading Indian delegation carrying tricolor in a colorful ceremony.
Indian competitors ended their campaign in the third place, with 66 medals including 26 Gold, 20 Silver and 20 Bronze medals.
Australia stood first in the medal tally with 198 medals (80 Gold, 59 Silver and 59 Bronze) followed by England 136 medals.
11. Manika Batra : First Indian Woman to Win Gold in Table Tennis Singles at CWG
Top-ranked Indian female paddler Manika Batra clinched a gold medal in the women’s singles Table Tennis final.
She dished out a clinical performance to win the contest 4-0 against Singapore’s Mengyu Yu .
She become the first Indian woman to win gold in the women’s singles event at the Commonwealth Games.
This is Batra’s third medal of the tournament .
Earlier she won a gold medal in women’s team event and a silver in the women’s doubles event as well.
Batra had combined with Mouma Das to finish second best to Singapore’s Feng and Mengyu Yu just a day before.
12. Kidambi Srikanth : Ace Shuttler Becomes World No 1
Indian badminton player Kidambi Srikanth has emerged as World Number 1 in the latest edition of the BWF rankings .
Kidambi Srikanth has replaced Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen and become World Number 1 in the BWF rankings.
He has become the first Indian male player to achieve this mark.
Saina Nehwal was the first Indian girl to become world No 1 in 2015.
Kidambi Srikanth has a total of 76,895 points in Men’s Singles category.
In the women’s category P. V. Sindhu has secured third rank.
13. Sampanna Ramesh Shelar : 17-Year-Old Pune Swimmer Sets World Record
Sampanna Ramesh Shelar, a 17-year-old swimmer from Pune has set a world record to double cross the Bangla Channel.
Water stretch from Saint Martin’s Island Jetty to Teknaf in Bangladesh is known as the Bangla Channel.
Sampanna Ramesh Shelar has become the first person to double cross (swim to and fro) the Bangla Channel.
Sampanna Ramesh Shelar accomplished this feat on April 13, 2018 by completing the journey of 32.2 kilometers in 9 hours and 10 minutes.
Ramesh Shelar has been practicing at Shark Aquatic Club situated at Pune and this is his maiden international record.
14. World Art Day – 15th April
World Art Day is an international celebration of the fine arts, that annually takes place on April 15.
The first World Art Day was observed on April 15, 2012.
World Art Day was created by the International Association of Art.
The idea was proposed at the 17th General Assembly in Guadalajara and the committee unanimously approved it.
The date of the day became the birthday of the great Italian painter, sculptor, writer, thinker, philosopher, mathematician and scientific innovator Leonardo da Vinci.
World Art Day aims to promote the values, that art has brought to the world since the beginning of time.
It raises public awareness about the importance of creative activity worldwide.
Celebration was supported by national committees of the International Association of Art. National committees of Sweden, France, South Africa, Slovakia and Venezuela organized outdoor exhibitions with sculpture, paintings, prints and cooking demonstration in honor of Leonardo da Vinci.
