    1. United Nations Launches UN Road Safety Trust Fund to Improve Road Safety Worldwide

    United Nations (UN) has launched a UN Road Safety Trust Fund to spur action that could save lives and prevent the loss of opportunity associated with road accidents.

    The fund has been launched in wake of tragic road accidents in Canada and India.

    As per data provided by UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, around 1.3 million drivers, passengers and pedestrians die each year, and up to 50 million are injured on the world’s roads.

    UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is the secretariat for the trust fund.

    2. Jayant Sinha to Head a Task Force for Fast-Tracking UAV Technology

    The Union Government has constituted 13-member task force to prepare road map and fast-track implementation of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology or drones in the country.

    It will be headed by Minister of State (MoS) for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha and will have representatives from government, PSUs, industry and sectoral experts.

    3. Biggest Waste-to-Energy Plant to Come Up in Gurugram

    A power plant worth Rs 502 crore will be set up in Bandhwari village of Gurugram district, Haryana.

    It will produce electricity from waste under the Integrated Solid Waste Management Scheme.

    The plant will be set up by August 2019. It will generate 25 MW of electricity.

    Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar laid the foundation stone of the plant in Bandhwari village .

    He said that the plant will be set up as per the conditions of the National Green Tribunal.

    Urban Local Bodies Minister Kavita Jain said the plant will be installed in Gurugram and Sonipat clusters to generate electricity from waste.

    The energy plant coming up on Gurugram-Faridabad road would be bigger than the one (with 24MW capacity) located in Delhi’s Bawana.

    4. PNB Launches Products to Mark Foundation Day

    The Punjab National Bank (PNB) has launched new products such as pre-approved credit card and UPI solution to mark its 124th foundation day.

    The bank has also announced its UPI partnership with the expense management app WALNUT, comes embedded with features such as bill reminders, bill-split and instant paperless loans.

    5. World’s Largest Solar Park to Come Up in Gujarat

    Gujarat is to set up India’s largest 5,000MW solar park in Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR).

    Gujarat state government offered its in-principle approval to the project.

    It will be established on 11,000 hectares of land along the Gulf of Khambhat in the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR).

    The construction of this solar park will attract an investment of Rs 25,000 crore and provide employment for more than 20,000 people.

    Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd (GPCL), Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) and Gujarat Electric Transmission Corporation (GETCO) along with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and the Central Transmission Unit (CTU) are involved in implementing the project.

    Gujarat state government has also planned to set up a 200MW wind park in DSIR.

    It would attract additional investment of Rs 1,400 crore.

    6. Smriti Irani Inaugurates Home Expo India 2018

    The union minister of Textiles and Information and Broadcasting ‘Smriti Irani’ has inaugurated the three days Home Expo India 2018 (seventh edition) at India Expo Centre & Mart, Greater Noida.

    The expo is three segmented categories show comprising Housewares, Textiles, and Furniture.

    Around 650 Indian exporters of all the three categories will be displaying exquisite products of Houseware, decorative, furnishing, flooring, textiles and furniture accessories.

    Home Expo India 2018 is expected to generate business deals for direct import, organized by Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH).

    7. ISRO Carries Out Fourth and Final Orbit Raising Operation of IRNSS-1I

    The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully carried out its fourth and final orbit raising operation of IRNSS-1I navigation satellite.

    The targeted perigee height is 35,381 km and apogee height at 35,793 km.

    Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, IRNSS-1I is the eighth and the last navigation satellite in the constellation.

    It is designed indigenously to provide accurate position information service to the users in India.

    The Polar Satellite Launch vehicle PSLV-C41 had successfully launched the satellite from Sriharikota last Thursday.

    8. NASA to Launch Washing Machine-Sized Spacecraft

    NASA is to launch a washing machine-sized spacecraft that aims to vastly expand mankind’s search for planets beyond the solar system.

    The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is scheduled to launch today from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

    Its main goal over the next two years is to scan more than 200,000 of the brightest stars for signs of planets circling them and causing a dip in brightness known as a transit.

    The satellite is going to be orbiting the nearest brightest stars and might find planets that orbit stars which can even see with the naked eye.

    TESS is designed as a follow-on to the US space agency’s Kepler spacecraft, which was the first of its kind and launched in 2009. The aging spacecraft is currently low on fuel and near the end of its life.

    9. World Voice Day – 16th April

    THEME 2018 : “Make the Choice to Cherish Your Voice.”

    World Voice Day (WVD) is a worldwide annual event that takes place on April 16 devoted to the celebration of the phenomenon of voice.

    The aim is to demonstrate the enormous importance of the voice in our daily lives, as a tool of communication, and as an application of a large number of sciences, such as physics, psychology, phonetics, art, and biology.

    It was initiated in 1999 as a combined effort of American and European otolaryngologists and speech and language pathologists , particularly the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) and MD Mario André in Portugal.

    Now, the celebration of the World Voice Day is scattered around the globe, including concerts, symposia, open house at voice clinics and voice education institutes, TV shows, and radio programs.
