Somalia’s new President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has chosen political newcomer Hassan Ali Khaire, a former oil company executive, as the country’s prime minister
The appointment was announced shortly before Mohamed, also known as Farmajo, departed to Saudi Arabia for his first foreign trip since his election.
The president has requested Somali citizens to work with the prime minister.

2. China Steams Past U.S., France to be Germany’s Biggest Trading Partner
China for the first time became Germany’s most important trading partner in 2016, overtaking the United States, which fell back to third place behind France.
German imports from and exports to China rose to 170 billion euros ($180 billion) last year, Federal Statistics Office figures showed.

3. Maneka Gandhi Announces Compensation Fund for Child Abuse Victims
Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi has announced the setting up of a compensation fund under Nirbhaya scheme to provide financial help to children who are victims of sexual crimes. A Central Victim Compensation Fund was set up with an initial corpus of Rs 200 crore in 2015 but has not not been operating, the official said.
POCSO Act or Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was formulated in 2012 to address sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of children.
4. Government Ropes in Shilpa Shetty as Swachh Bharat Brand Ambassador
The government has roped in actress Shilpa Shetty as a brand ambassador for the Modi government’s cleanliness initiative Swachh Bharat Mission. The 41-year-old actress will feature in TV and radio campaigns aimed at discouraging people from littering on roads.
Soon, campaign posters featuring her will be displayed at various places across the country. Shetty is the latest entrant in the list of the mission’s ambassadors like Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shankar Mahadevan and Sachin Tendulkar.
5. Canteens to be Opened under Antyodaya Anna Yojana in Haryana
Haryana Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board will open canteens under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana to provide food at affordable prices to construction workers and poor people. They will be provided food at heavily subsidized rates, breakfast for 5 rupees and full-course meal for 10 rupees per person right at their work place.
The mobile vans will be deployed to make food available to the poor at labor chowks. According to the Chief Minister Manohar Lal, the final touches will be given to the scheme within a month.
The scheme initially will be started for one year and non-governmental organizations and social organizations will also be involved in its implementation.
6. Rajasthan 2nd Largest Crude Oil Producer in Country
Rajasthan has become the second largest crude oil producer in the country after the offshore field Bombay High, Governor Kalyan Singh said in the Assembly, highlighting the achievements of the state government.
Delivering his speech on the first day of the Budget Session, Singh said oilfields in the state were producing nearly 90 lakh tones oil annually, which is 24 per cent of the total domestic crude oil production.
7. Delhi Govt Approves 36 % Increase in Minimum Wages for Workers
The Delhi government has approved a 36% increase in the minimum wages for workers. The minimum wages for unskilled workers have been increased from 9,724 to 13,350 rupees.
For semi-skilled workers, wages have been increased from 10,764 rupees to 14,698. In the skilled category, wages will be from 11,830 to 16,182 rupees. The wage hike proposal will be sent to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for approval.
8. Andhra Pradesh to Develop Vizag as Fintech Hub, Signs MoU with Visa
Andhra Pradesh government has unveiled its plans to develop Visakhapatnam as Fintech hub of the country and signed MoUs with Visa and Thomson Reuters.
Visa, the leading global payments network, will help transform Vishakhapatnam into India’s first “less cash” city. This initiative is designed to provide the foundation for the city to emerge as India’s Fintech Valley.
The state government also signed a MoU with Thomson Reuters for cooperation in Fintech initiatives in the state.
9. Former Nagaland CM Zeliang Appointed as Finance Advisor to State Govt
The former Nagaland Chief Minister T R Zeliang has been appointed as Finance Advisor to the state government.
Zeliang, appointed by the Governor P B Acharya.
He will receive the pay and allowances admissible to a cabinet minister.
10. PV Sindhu Set to be Deputy Collector
Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu, who is the first Indian woman athlete to win a silver medal at the Olympics, has accepted a government job which was offered by the Andhra Pradesh Government following her Rio de Janeiro triumph.
The 21-year-old shuttler has been working with Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) since 2013 and is currently an assistant manager (sports) at its Hyderabad office.
